McCabes Lawyers welcomed former High Court Justice, The Honourable Michael Kirby AC CMG on Friday 12 June 2026 for a special Lunch & Learn session exploring diversity and inclusion, reconciliation, leadership, and human rights.
Hosted by the firm’s staff-led Diversity & Inclusiveness Committee, together with the Pro Bono & CSR Committee the session formed part of McCabes’ ongoing internal education program, which encourages learning and the exchange of ideas across the firm. While Lunch & Learn sessions are typically led by McCabes professionals, the event featured one of Australia’s most influential legal minds and most prominent advocates for equality.
As one of Australia’s first openly gay senior judicial figures, Michael Kirby has long used his platform to promote inclusion and challenge discrimination. Throughout his distinguished legal career, Michael Kirby has become widely recognised for his judicial contributions, including his involvement in landmark decisions that helped shape modern Australia and his advocacy on issues of human rights.
The discussion explored Australia’s progress towards reconciliation, diversity and inclusion within the legal profession, the ethical implications of artificial intelligence in law, judicial leadership, and the enduring importance of authenticity and service.
Terry McCabe, Principal at McCabes, said the session was a proud moment and a memorable day in the firm’s history.
“Michael Kirby is one of the great figures of Australian legal life, a jurist of exceptional intellect, and a tireless advocate for equality and human rights,” Terry McCabe said.
“We are truly honoured to have welcomed him to McCabes and to have given our team the rare opportunity to engage with someone who has shaped the law and the profession in such profound ways.”
Reflecting on the event, Michael Kirby said, “I enjoyed my encounter with legal colleagues at McCabes Lawyers.
“A distinctive feature was the thought that had been put into the schedule of issues that it was hoped I would cover. In many years of speaking to legal audiences, I have never had such a schedule evincing high variety and prominence on law and human rights. I congratulate those who helped shape the dialogue by reference to these themes.”
