Steven specialises in the management of complex insurance, construction and commercial disputes. He has practiced as a contentious defence and insurance coverage lawyer for over 15 years. He has a broad general insurance practice that focuses on professional and financial risks - directors' and officers' liability, class actions, regulatory investigations, and professional indemnity.  Steven has a strong interest in the construction industry and also advises on coverage and claims under public liability, industrial special risks, contractors all risks and contract works policies.

Steven has a proven track record of effectively resolving complex disputes through arbitrations and in proceedings in all Federal and State Courts.  Steven is qualified and has practiced in Australia, Canada and Ireland.

Karpik v Carnival PLC: The Ruby Princess – Anything but smooth sailing

On 25 October 2023, Justice Stewart of the Federal Court of Australia handed down the decision in Karpik v Carnival plc (The Ruby Princess) (Initial Trial) [2023] FCA 1280 - believed to be the first decision (globally) addressing a claim for personal injury and related damages arising from COVID-19 infections on board a cruise ship.
